Filippo Juvarra

Filippo Juvarra is known for his works in Turin (Palazzo Madama, Stupinigi, Superga) and in Madrid. Born in Messina in 1678, he studied in Rome with Carlo Fontana. In 1711 he published Raccolta di varie targhe fatte da professori primarii di Roma a fifty-page book of plates reproducing coats of arms by Michelangelo, Bernini, Borromini, etc.. It is a unique book for its time due to the scientific detail by which each coat of arms is identified. At the end of the book Juvarra provided some geometric advice on the design of a coat of arms. The book was reprinted several times with some modifications in the plates. Each plate is shown together with a photo of the coat of arms as it is today.
When you see a separate link on the name of the building this leads you to a plate by Giuseppe Vasi showing it. In the background of this page you can see a preliminary drawing of the coat of arms shown in plate 13.
