A glimpse of Baroque in Istanbul
In this page a short selection of "Baroque" monuments of Istanbul.
The influence of the great architect Sinan lasted for more than a century after his death until this mosque built in 1748 - 1755 by Simeon Kalfa introduced elements showing the influence of baroque and rococo.
This nice fountain built in 1732 is close to Kilic Ali Pasha Camii one of Sinan's last works.
The name means Mosque of the Victory, but it does not refer to a victory over
external enemies. It was built by Mahmut II in 1822-26 to celebrate the massacre
of the Janissaries, the guards of the Sultan who from being the strength
of his army had become a threat to his life.
